SEALS ON THE SOUTHERN BEACHES OF THASSOS

 

Seals have reappeared after an absence of many years, on the southern beaches of Thassos.

 

 

We have seen them at Aliki and at Panagia island, and one young seal has been swimming around the cape of Ayiou Antoniou near Potos for several days. These rare mammals disappeared from the island twenty-five years ago, but have occasionally been seen in the last few years searching for food in the rich fishing grounds between the peninsulas of Vamvouras and Ayios Antonis. They follow the fishing boats with no sign of fear, and seem to enjoy their visits here. However, seals can cause great damage to fishing nets, and for this reason they were hunted and slaughtered in large numbers by the local fishermen in the past. These days the fishermen are more tolerant and regard with curiosity these visitors who bring back memories of the old days when our seas teemed with these likeable mammals.
